"…wash yourself of yourself" was the first work that Chen-Hui and I worked on together closely. While we spend multiple hours working on the piece, I progressively conceived of the form as scalable – something that could work and create novel experiences when scaled to different lengths. My interest in this regard was an exploration of continual transition ¬– something that could be either nearly imperceptibly gradual or rather more obvious in its directionality. For the first couple of performances I was more interested in the former type of transition. These lasted nearly 45 minutes apiece. However, considering the practicality presenting the work, Chen-Hui and I began to perform a more programmable 20 to 25 minute version of the work that we have since played over a dozen times all over the US and Asia. This said, all these years I have always wanted to perform a version that would last more than one hour and could really inhabit the work's potential long and nearly seamless transitions and truly explore the liminal spaces of continual transition. Of course, such a performance would last the length of an entire concert and would normally be rather difficult to schedule.

This said, once we first started to think of performing live streaming concerts during the extended quarantine, a longer version of “…wash yourself of yourself” was one of our first ideas for a live stream. After a fairly successful live stream we then decided to more carefully examine how to perform this longer version of the work best and worked hard to record a sort of definitive version. After multiple takes and a lot of discussion we were finally overcome by how well our last recorded take went. I’m now thrilled to share – after over ten years of performances by four different pianists¬ – what is likely my favorite version of “…wash yourself of yourself.”
