While preparing for this concert, Chen-Hui remarked to me repeatedly that the repertoire was quite sad and nostalgic. I have to agree. Espcially considering the current time where we have been quarantined (or “self-isolating”) for nearly three months, the echoes of time past and sense of longing that permeate all four of these works resonate rather deeply. For example, in Kee Yong Chong’s work Time Flows II – which is also the first work our duo ever commissioned – the fixed media part constantly passes through multiple materials and cultural references, such as recordings of a guqin playing a classical Chinese work, as though generations are passing by within a moment. Wen-Chung Chou’s work The Willows Are New presents his own personal longing as reflected through an orchestration of an sorrowful ancient classical guqin work (which Chong also quotes within the fixed media part of his work) titled 陽關三疊 (“Three Songs of Parting at the Yang Guan”). Chen-Hui Jen’s work Towards Silent Peaks is based on a deeply felt poem of love by the contemporary Taiwanese poet 楊牧 (Yang Mu) and filled with literal echoes. Finally, in Orlando Jacinto García’s superimposed sonic images, the pianist plays along with multiple edited recorded live performances of earlier works by Garcia for solo piano in which both the performance space and occasional performer and audience noises cannot help but remind us of a time when we could gather in person to listen to music together.
